Why do believer think that they are "saved" if they continue to do wrong things?

I was allegedly "saved" when I was 19. It wasn't until many years and countless transgressions later that I began to change my ways, realizing that I could no longer be the way I'd been. Now I actually heed the teachings of Christ - almost 30 years after being saved (well, I began about 25 years after).
