Can i catch fungal infection from my dog?

I have a 10 month old chi- who is very cute! he sleeps with us in the bed and is super attached to me! I noticed last week that he had a tiny patch of hair missing by his neck and I freaked out. Took him to the doctor who gave him a shot of something and gave me small tube of liquid medication to apply to patch. the doctor doesn't know what type of fungal infection it is but just told me to wash my hands after handling the doggy. The thing is that I have isolated the dog to the couch and he cries for me 24/7, wining that I'm not holding him and that he is not on the bed with us. I am afraid ill get infected. I went an bought fungal shampoo and lamesil spray - which is used for athletes foot they say it works really we'll. How long should I wait till he can sleep with us again and I can hold him without fear?
